Spring in England brings a fever pitch in anticipation of the English Triple Crown of horse racing (2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, St Leger Stakes). With little time remaining until the first step towards the coveted crown, a stellar field of the best horses in Europe is starting to take shape for the Group 1 2000 Guineas. For horseplayers, it’s time to start looking for free horse racing tips to be used on the day of the race.
About the 2000 Guineas
What more can be said about a race that was inaugurated more than 200 years ago? The race is steeped in a heritage that is second to none. It has been won by some of the greatest thoroughbreds (Sir Ivor, Tap on Wood, El Gran Senor, Sea the Stars and the undefeated, incomparable Frankel) in European racing history. This year’s event is scheduled for May 6, 2017, the same day as America’s Kentucky Derby. The race will be run at Newmarket for a total purse of £450,000 with the winner’s portion being just short of £300,000. A field of 3-year olds will meet the starter to contest 1,600 meters (one mile) on a straight turf course.
The Contenders and their Odds
As indicated above, the names of some prominent 3-year olds from around Europe are being mentioned as possible starters in this year’s race. It shouldn’t come as any surprise to see two, not one, horses trained by Aidan O’Brien listed at the top of the odds list. The fact O’Brien has trained 7 winners of this race is no small detail that should be pushed aside by horseplayers. Let’s take a look at a few contenders and their odds.
- Churchill (6-4) – After losing his debut at the Curraugh in May of last year, Churchill went on to win his next 5 races, all at a distance of 1,400 meters (7 furlongs). After winning the Group 1 National Stakes and the Group 1 Newhurst Stakes right here at Newmarket to close out his racing season, he was voted the Cartier 2-year old Champion in Europe.
- Caravaggio (11-2) – While not quite as accomplished as his stablemate, Caravaggio gives O’Brien two worthy bullets to fire. It’s still possible this one could be directed towards the French Derby, but the 2000 Guineas is tentatively on the schedule. The son of Scat Daddy won all four of his starts as a 2-year old, including a big win in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curraugh to close out his racing season.
- National Defense (20-1) – The lightly raced National Defense comes from the barn of French champion trainer Criquette Head-Maarek, who has had great success in the 1000 Guineas and would love to capture her first 2000 Guineas. National Defense closed out his 2016 season with a dominating win in France’s Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. After finishing a nice second in last week’s Group 3 Prix Djebel, it’s on to this race or the French Derby.
- Rivet (16-1) – After winning the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy last year at Doncaster, Trainer William Haggas set his sights on winning the big prize with Rivet in the 2000 Guineas. The top class trainer has been knocking on the door with several top 3-year olds over the last few years, but has yet to break through with a winner in this race. This may well be his best chance yet.
